Carles GR: “The Trilogy of Time”, a Musical Journey Through Past, Present, and Future
In the landscape of contemporary jazz, Carles GR, a Spanish jazzman of Catalan origin based in Normandy, offers an ambitious and introspective work with “The Trilogy of Time”. This latest project, part of the Carles GR Web Project, reflects a flourishing creativity and a refusal to conform to the labels that often limit musical genres.
A Free and Digital Approach
Carles GR stands out in this project through his bold choice to break away from traditional codes of music production. The Carles GR Web Project is not designed for live performances but rather for the digital world, a space for direct interaction with a global audience. In response to an era saturated with ephemeral and standardized productions, the artist offers an alternative that emphasizes depth, creative freedom, and genuine exchange.
For this project, he utilizes a wide range of digital tools: electronic drums (Spectrasonics Stylus RMX), bass (Spectrasonics Trilian), synthesizers (Spectrasonics Omnisphere), and virtual pianos (Modartt Pianoteq and AAS Lounge Lizard). Added to this are his signature instruments, such as the Godin Multiac Jazz SA and Lowden S-25J guitars. The entire project was recorded, mixed, and mastered in his Rouen-based studio, Choza Records, a space that embodies the artist’s unique sound universe.
The compositions are accompanied by minimalist videos showing recording sessions, with a particular focus on technique and sound details. For interested musicians, Carles GR also shares sheet music, reinforcing the idea of an open and collaborative project.
“The Trilogy of Time”: A Timeless Musical Reflection
At the heart of this project lies “The Trilogy of Time”, a three-part musical suite representing the past, present, and future. The first installment, “Memorias del Ayer”, immerses the listener in a melancholic and introspective atmosphere. As an anonymous author quoted by Carles GR says: “The past never goes away; it loves to hide in music, in streets, in dreams, in memories, in life.” This composition elegantly illustrates how the past continues to shape our present experiences.
The repertoire also includes original compositions and jazz standards rearranged according to the project’s sonic aesthetic. The diversity of the pieces reflects the artist’s unconventional approach, where duration, styles, and orchestrations dissolve in favor of unrestrained creativity.
An Invitation to Exchange
Carles GR emphasizes the importance of dialogue between the artist and the audience. In the absence of applause from a concert hall, he invites listeners to share their impressions on his digital platforms. These exchanges, according to him, are essential to enriching the relationship between music, the musician, and those who listen.
With “The Trilogy of Time”, Carles GR offers a singular work that transcends the boundaries of jazz—a sound journey inviting us to explore our own memories while reflecting on the passage of time. An attentive listen is essential to fully appreciate this bold and deeply personal project.
Enjoy the journey through time!
